The Erasmus program is one of the best things ever. That’s the truth. God bless the European money for this. I did my Erasmus in Finland and it was one of the best experiences in my life that I will never forget. Because the Erasmus feelings are completely different from the “normal” feelings. It is quite probable that they only happen one time, and you know it.
Here you can find a list of feelings and things that I am quite sure you experienced in your time abroad.
1. When they accept your Erasmus request.
You are in. You will be one of these Erasmus students that you heard about… You can’t stop imagining how your life will be. You can’t stop counting the days until your departure to your new life. THE ERASMUS LIFE.
2. When you think “now what”.
You just arrived in your new place. New country, new language, new people… But now what. Well, now is time to get used to the public system, university, new people… Too many things at the same time.
3. When you have your first skype with your parents and they ask how are you.
Don’t worry, it is completely normal. In my first weeks in Finland I got lost like 15 times. My thoughts were something like “if I can’t go to the supermarket without getting lost on the way, how the fuck I am going to survive here one year”.
4. When you attend to your first Erasmus lecture.
One morning, you wake up and you go to your first lecture in your new university. You are excited. A lot. You are going to learn A LOT. Or at least, see different people, but when the teacher starts talking… You think “This can’t be English, I don’t understand a shit”. Don’t worry. Two weeks later you will understand everything. Or almost. Or at least you tried.
5. When you start understanding your lectures…
You thought it will be awesome, right? But no. It is not. Why? Because it’s a lecture. Maybe you have 3 or 4 interesting courses but the rest are exactly like in your home university: BORING.
6. When they tell you there is a party tonight and it is Wednesday.
Of course, Erasmus is a synonymous of party. It’s like this. If you are not having fun and going to parties you are doing something wrong in your Erasmus life. It is the best place to meet other Erasmus and it is the place where you really make good friends. You know you will be friend with the guy who just invited you to a beer because you know, it is a free beer and you love him.
7. When you make your groceries.
It depends where you go to make your Erasmus. I was in Finland and the prices of the alcohol were not cheap. At all. It was hell. My friends and I created our own beer but this is a different story… If you are going to place where the alcohol is relatively cheap, the alcohol will be your first priority in the supermarket.
8. When you heard the name of your country in a conversation
Because you are ready to share the knowledge about your country that you have inside you. The best opportunity is when you hear someone talk about it. It looks natural… it looks easy… But be careful, it is quite probable that people will not give a shit about it.
9. When you heard a joke about your country in that conversation
And you will hear a lot of them. Because we all have country neighbors and we all have jokes about them… It is funny until you start thinking “this guy is an asshole… I will kill him if he says another joke about my country”. Breathe. You have to find a joke about his country and all is solved.
10. When you speak English drunk.
I think the alcohol helped me more to speak English than all the lectures in my high school. The alcohol gives you freedom to try to speak English without caring about if it is correct or someone understands you.
